Synergy

Synergy can be defined as two or more constituents working together to produce a result not obtainable by any of the constituents independently: the sum of the parts adds up to more than the whole.

This is fundamental to Traditional Herbal Medicine, where it is necessary to combine different herbs to enhance their overall action.  We use the whole herb, rather than extracts or active ingredients, which maintains their natural balance and prevents unwanted side-effects or adverse reaction.

Herbs have been used safely for thousands of years in their whole form, which encompasses a complex mixture of many different compounds. Their synergistic effects maintain balance within the body whilst taking potent effect.

For example, the plant Meadowsweet contains salicylic acid, which is closely related to aspirin.  In isolation this compound can cause internal bleeding from the stomach wall (a well-known side effect of aspirin) but Meadowsweet contains compounds called polyphenols, which protect and are healing to the stomach.

Pharmaceutical companies are unable to patent plant extracts because they are natural products.  Therefore, they isolate only the most active chemical from a plant and manufacture it synthetically.  They can then patent this new chemical for use in a prescription medicine.  When an isolated component of a plant is changed into a pharmaceutical drug, the synergy is lost and the risk of side effects is greatly increased because the other balancing compounds in the plant have been removed.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal Clinic Laboratory

Herbal medicine harnesses the medicinal compounds naturally occurring within plants to restore health and vitality to the body. Each medicinal herb contains many pharmacologically active substances, which work synergistically (in co-operation) to resolve disease. As a result, herbal medicines do not produce unwanted side effects when prescribed by a qualified practitioner.

Iris Diagnosis

Iridology is the examination of the iris to reveal strengths and weaknesses of a person's inherited and developed constitution. Each organ has a neurological blueprint that creates an individual pattern within the eye.

It is an effective, non-invasive and pain free diagnostic tool used in the Herbal Clinic, to illustrate the unique pattern of an individual's health and potential disease. Changes in the iris are observed throughout treatment, which confirm the progression of health.

Iridology is currently being stringently researched to enable it to be used in mainstream hospitals. [Read More...]

Acupuncture

Herbal Clinic Swansea - Acupuncture
A relatively recent addition to the treatments available at the Herbal Clinic, acupuncture was initially intended for repairing musculoskeletal damage, such as that causing lower back pain, knee and hip problems, due to injury or systemic illness. It can however, be used for any patient who wishes to receive the treatment, in which case it facilitates and boosts the other healing modalities and assists the progression to health.

Mr James is trained in both a traditional understanding of acupuncture and current needling points and techniques used in Chinese hospitals today.

Acupuncture works as a synergistic triad of treatment alongside herbal medicine and in depth consultation.
