To the editor – Fears were raised this week as a government health advisor described antibiotic resistance as ‘a ticking time bomb.’
Since the advent of antibiotics we have come to expect solutions to all our health problems to be as simple as swallowing a pill. But when has this ever really solved the problem? In many cases the antibiotics have such a detrimental effect on the healthy gut flora that the immune system is compromised and another infection swiftly follows.
Perhaps it is time to recognise these negative effects and look to the possibility of another answer?
There is a solution.
To put this succinctly:
1. Patient education and personal responsibility – in order to stay well we need to learn how to care for ourselves.
2. In-depth consultation aimed at finding the root cause of the disease – By exploring all the reasons why the illness has become established, from character traits to diet and relationships, the disease can be eradicated.
3. Prescription of medication which strengthens the body and enhances natural immunity – for example herbal medicines.
At The Herbal Clinic we have been treating patients for over 30 years, presenting with both infectious and chronic diseases. We have never needed to advise antibiotics.
Long term goals will provide lasting solutions whereas the ‘magic bullet’ has only ever been a quick fix.
