Dear Editor – MMR.

Freedom of choice seems to have become a thing of the past as officials strive to achieve herd immunity; parents are persuaded that not only are they putting their own children at risk, but others who may be more vulnerable to the complications of measles.

Can things really be as straightforward as they are presented in this case? Or has the burning desire to eradicate measles blinded us to any other viewpoint?

Research suggests that there are long-term benefits to the immune system through contracting the measles virus naturally. A reduction in atopic disease (eczema, asthma and allergies) has been observed. (Ronne (1985), Shaheen et al. (1996)).

A recent story in ‘The Daily Mail’ brought to light the case of an American family who have been awarded £600,000 by a court in compensation for their claim that the MMR vaccine caused their son’s autism. The ruling came after a judge in Italy awarded £140,000 to an Italian couple who said their son had autism after his routine childhood MMR inoculation. These are not isolated incidents.

As we have been repeatedly made aware, measles too is not without its risks, children who are immunocompromised or malnourished may suffer complications.

I do not wish to scare parents of children who have received the vaccine, nor discourage those who intend to vaccinate their children from doing so. No story is ever one sided and there are risks and benefits whichever course one chooses.

‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’ is a review of conventional medicine and safer alternatives. For those seeking to be well informed and gather a balanced view on the topic of vaccination, this publication is a good place to start.

I only hope we can maintain some subjectivity in the height of the panic and accept that it is still the parents’ right to decide on the health of their children.

Yours faithfully,
